We drove to Keith Woods home about fifteen minutes away for a reception. They had setup a tent in the backyard which was large. The difference out here was big. You could get way more for your money here, but you gave up the city life. I lived like this some time ago. It was great to raise my girls, but I was over it. I was most happy these days living close to everything.
Keith was still setting up the food at the tables. There were outside heaters since there was a chill in the air in late November. It wasnât terrible, just around the low fifties but enough that if you spent time outside you might want to think about going indoors. My guess was Keith had some money, the tent and heaters certainly were costly. I watched him in silence for some time and noticed how sincere he seemed during the whole event. There were times I found him alone with tears in his eyes standing over a sink inside trying to collect himself. When I returned to the tent, Mac walked over to me and quietly said, âyou know, I think her father already did all that for her.â
I looked at him, âyeah well, now I know also.â
âItâs not our job to be everyoneâs father figure.â
âNothing I can do about it. He was a good man who got dealt a crappy hand and left behind a wonderful daughter. Someone should watch out for her.â I had not noticed that Jorge was standing behind me.
âYou are right guys, but my god. If you guys do that for every case you work on doesnât it make you tired,â Jorge asked.
I turned to him, âit doesnât. Plus some people are not worth worrying about, but then some of them turn out to be well worth investing time in.â
âWow, I might have hoped for a more Christian view from you,â Jorge said.
Pretty sure I gave him a shocked look. âSorry to say that although I like to consider myself a person of theological views, I cannot say I can live by them, stay alive and do this work. I have to live in the world, and in doing so, I have grown a little cynical. I also donât have the luxury of turning my back on the unknown. We are pretty good at what we do and although it might be a grace from God that gives us our skills, the people we come across at times are not of the same ideals. Sometimes itâs better for us to watch out for each other.â I pointed to Mac, âand let God put his attention where it could do more good.â
Jorge shook his head. âSorry, I understand what you are saying. And I know you are good guys. I just know Keith and I really just wanted you to know I will be a father figure for Charlotte. Victor was closer than my brother to me. I will do my best to watch over her for the rest of my life.
